ART AND COMMUNITY INITIATIVE BY MPAATA ROGERS WILLIAMS

Art and Community is a project that started in 2011 using street theatre to take theatre (dance, drama, acrobatics, clown, music, etc.) nearer to the people in form theatrical performance and presentation in outdoor public spaces without a specific paying audience. These spaces can be anywhere, including shopping malls, car parks, recreational reserves and street corners.
Art and Community create opportunity for the different categories of people who cannot afford to have theatre performances in the different theatres in the country. Art and community operate mainly in the city suburbs, upcountry trading centres, market centres and communities of persons with learning disabilities and disadvantaged persons.
PROJECT MISSION;·         To use Performing and Visual Arts to influence the social, economic, and political change of communities.
PROJECT VISION;·         A community of performing and visual arts.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES;1.      Art and Community brings artists from the different art forms of Art like performing artists and visual artists to use their skills for the change of communities and lives of people.
2.       Brings performances near to those communities that cannot afford to access theatre.
3.      Also carry out training and workshops in different art forms with various organizations, schools, institutions and communities.
4.      Partners with organizations, schools, companies and institutions, in the use of street Theatre for social, economic, and political change of communities.
5.      Sensitize communities on different issues of subject matter.
PROJECT AREA OF OPERATION;The project core operation has been in the city suburbs of Kampala, however since last year we have expanded our operations to reach out to the country sides of Uganda.
PROJECT CURRENTLY UNDERTAKINGS;The project currently undertakes the following activities;
·         The monthly Street Theatre performances in the city suburbs of Kampala every first Friday of the month.
·         The invisible theatre in communities used for sensitization.
·         Organizing training and workshops on performing and visual arts to different groups of young people in the country.
